Compassionate Horsemanship Lessons

Connecting equestrians with their horses through a foundational lesson series that builds empathy and compassion by focusing on skills that are grounded in two-way communication and consent.

If your horse has never been able to say no, how do you know they are truly saying yes?

It is an honor to be able to ride a horse.

The feeling of the wind, riding on the back of such an enormously gracious, powerful creature can take your breath away.

But if we have never checked in with the horse, how do we know they are enjoying themselves as much as we think they are?

How we do this

01.

By learning the art of clicker training it is possible to build a strong relationship with an animal that is built on trust. We learn to ride from the ground up while keeping the horse’s emotions in mind.

02.

The exercises we focus on create connection instead of the need to control. Instead of the horse serving our needs, we learn to communicate with them where both parties feel heard.

03.

There is emphasis on the process over the outcome. I provide a force free way of riding and working with the horse that leaves both horse and human feeling more connected.

Clicker training is a method based on positive reinforcement.

The goal is that the animal learns that they have choice, then willingly choose, on their own accord, to build a relationship with the trainer.

To me, this is the best part about using a non-coercive training method: When the animal’s desire to meet you becomes mutual, a true friendship is born.

HOW IT WORKS

The click, which can be a verbal or mechanical click, marks a desired behaviour, which is followed by a reinforcer — usually food.

Clicker training is most commonly known to be used with dolphins, dogs and animals living in zoos. Although clicker training is not as popular in the mainstream equine community, it has been gaining popularity worldwide. Horses all over the world are showing humans the benefits of using this method of training — My horses and I have been impacted immensely.

The idea behind this training (communication) method is that it requires studying the behavioral psychology of each individual animal so that we can cater to their needs, therefore allowing them to still maintain their natural, wild state of being.

Punishment and pressure is not needed when applying this method of training, making it a much gentler approach. This can be a completely hands off way of training depending on what you are focusing on.
